See Robin's newest book Thinking Creatively: New Ways to Unlock Your Visual Imagination

I KNOW HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO FIND A GOOD graphic design textbook. I've been searching for one for years. And when I couldn't find one that was satisfactory, I solved the problem the best way I could. I wrote it myself.

Graphic Design Solutions  is a comprehensive text covering principles, theories and information about graphic design and advertising. It is based upon my teaching experience. Philip B. Meggs was kind enough to write in the foreword of Graphic Design Solutions:  "Landa's commitment and diligence as a design educator are apparent to the reader; her decision to document and publish her knowledge and experience is a fortunate event."

I wrote it in a friendly tone, the same way I teach my classes. The presentations and examples are clear and easy to comprehend. There are 290 illustrations of works by outstanding designers and art directors. It's a great visual resource -- one that you will want to keep.

What makes my book different?

  • Included in every chapter are exercises and projects for you to execute. Meggs wrote: "To aid in this transformation of information into inspiration and production, Landa includes exercises and projects in every section of this book. These are tried and proven over a decade and a half of design pedagogy."
  • There are tips and suggestions on design, advertising, and copywriting that are easy to follow and complete.
  • There is a comprehensive chapter on two-dimensional design.
  • A critique guide teaches you to assess and evaluate your own and others' work.
  • A comprehensive chapter on advertising addresses strategy and concept formulation, copywriting, and art direction.
  • There are comments from distinguished designers and art directors about their work.
  • Five noted designers offer tips on designing with type.
  • At the end is a chapter on putting together a portfolio.
The text covers everything from type to visual identity systems and ad campaigns. Chapters are:
An Introduction
Fundamentals of Graphic Design
Overview of Graphic Design
Designing with Type
Layout
Logos, Symbols, Pictograms and Stationery
Posters
Book Jackets and CD Covers
Packaging and Shopping Bags
Visual Identity
Advertisements
The Portfolio
Materials, Tools, and Processes
Communication Arts magazine says:
"Robin Landa has designed her book to concentrate on solutions for the marketplace. She presents a variety of real-world graphic design examples and accompanies each with a discussion of the creative thinking that formed them...Robin must be a very good teacher. We await sequels."
About the illustrations in GDS, Communication Arts says:
"They are very well selected and represent a wide range of ways to find solutions. The art-based thinking of Paul Rand is represented and the cool intellectual thought of Swiss Neue Graphik. But too, are 90's examples of playful design..."
